Who here thinks that Tomko has improved significantly as a wrestler since his days as the "problem solver"?

Problem Solver 10 Comments »

Yes he has.

Tomko performs moves way better, and for some reason, his mic skills have dramatically improved since his WWE days. I'm guessing the wrestling in Japan really helped him more than anything else.

Can you solve a goal programming problem with Excel Solver?

Problem Solver 2 Comments »

If you could recommend a tuturial or article that teaches me how exactly to do it, I'd be most grateful

I'm assuming that you know how to solve regular LP problems with Solver.

Goal programming problems are solved the same way except deviation variables (u sub 1, and v sub i) are added and subtracted from the constraints.
An example is found in "Introductory Management Science" by Eppen, et al 5th Ed., Prentice Hall page 409

It is set up as:
Min u1+ v1+ u2 + v2
s.t. x1 + x2 <= 100
12×1+29×2+u1-v1 = 1500
19×1 + 11×2 + u2 - v2 = 2000

all variables positive
Solution:
u1 = 0, v1 = 5, u2 = 0, v2 = 0, plus 3 other solutions.

The book says "this is now easily solved in Excel"
It doesn't work for me but maybe it'll give you some hints.

Interview Behaviour Question: Problem Solver?

Problem Solver 4 Comments »

I'm going for an interview for a job that requires the candidate to be a Problem Solver. What kind of examples can i use to show i have Problem Solving skills? I was thinking of using an example where I had a big problem and have solved it but i'm having trouble figuring out one.

Can anyone give me an example? thanks

Try to come up with a problem that you solved that either saved your company money or improved sales. If you can identify a problem, detail the solution, and put some numbers to the value of the solution, you'll do well.

"I identified a problem with our customer service…"
"I found that we were wasting money on…"

Get a piece of paper and start jotting down anything that comes to mind from your work of school experience. Force yourself to focus on it for 10-15 minutes. You'll come up with something.

Are you a creative problem-solver? Do you think productively or reproductively?

Problem Solver 4 Comments »

Do you typically approach a problem from many perspectives and search for many different ways of solving it?

I try to combine both approaches. Trying to determine if the problem fits a pattern similar to the one I have seen before and thinking also thinking of new approaches to solving the problem.
