He co-sponsored the McCain-Feingold bill for campaign finance reform, despite most Republicans opposing it, he's attacked pork barrell legislation pushed through by Republicans, joined Democrats in attack Rumsfeld's war strategy and he used to attack the religious right's demagogues (which has changed lately to secure the GOP nomination, but I think he'll abandon them soon afterward). I'm a Democrat and supporting Obama but I think he'd make a good president.

I suspect the "haters"(of all things not Obama) out there are unable to give a sincere, non-malicious objective answer.
Here are some concrete examples:
1. He worked together with Chuck Hagel to deal with the threat of loose nukes resulting from the downfall of the Soviet Union and actually got legislation passed.
2. As a Senator he also helped to write and pass an ethics reform bill.
3. Asa legislator in Illinois he also got a health care reform bill passed that was originally opposed by but eventually signed by Republicans.
4. He also passed, as a legislator in Illinois, a bill requiring that all confessions be videotaped. This was originally strongly opposed by the Republicans and by the Police union but he worked with those who did not want it and actually got .them to co-sign.
5. The way he has run his campaign is doing just that.

To "reach out" generally means to understand, sympathise with, and help someone. It would not be correct to say that someone wants to "reach out" to a better position at work.
More appropriate would be "aspire" to a better position at work. (The word "aspire" means to seek a particular goal).
You could also say that you "seek" a better position at work, you "desire" a better position at work, or you "wish" for a better position at work.
