Can I have a short nap in the afternoon (maybe an hour or 2) without removing my contact lenses???

Short Nap 13 Comments »

I know that it is harmful if u sleep at night with your lenses in your eyes but does a short nap make any difference???

Yes, a nap isn't a big deal. The main issue with contact lenses is they can limit the amount of oxygen that gets to your eyes. Some styles of contacts are made to allow enough air to get through that you can safely wear them for up to a month straight. It doesn't necessarily mean they will be comfortable for that long though.

You won't hurt your eyes by taking an afternoon nap with them in regardless of what kind of contacts they are.

How can I get my 8 week old to nap longer during the day?

Short Nap 9 Comments »

My 8 week old baby has recently (within the past three weeks) started napping for only 45 minutes. She only takes three or so naps per day and is obviously still tired upon wakening. She becomes fussy and overtired within a few minutes of waking up. I've tried to soothe her back to sleep and have even let her cry for 5 minutes upon wakening but she will not go back to sleep. I've tried feeding her after she wakes up thinking that was the reason but she's not hungry. Because of these short naps, her awake time is limited and she tires very quickly (cannot stay up longer than an hour without becoming fussy). Most of the time she falls asleep for her naps on her own in the crib if I catch her at just the right time. In the evenings she is extremely fussy because she is over-tired. After getting her to sleep, night sleep is not an issue as she is sleeping 6-7 hour stretches. Is there anything I can do to extend her nap time? Any reason why she is doing this?

warm milk right before going down… put your baby down and rub/massage her little forehead so she feels completely relaxed. and have soft soothing music play… also have the room smell of light lavender or chamomile

When did your baby settle into a predictable nap pattern?

Short Nap 5 Comments »

My little girl is 7 months old and her nap patterns keep changing - I never know what to expect! Right now she takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap, with total naptime equalling about 2-3 hours. Problem is, one day she'll take a long nap (1.5 hrs) in the morning and short nap in the afternoon (30 mins). Other days she'll do her short nap in the morning and longer in the afternoon. Some days she totally throws me off by taking two long naps or two short naps.

I'm glad that she's finally started to take at least one longer nap (she was a catnapper up until 5 months) but still it's frustrating that I never know how to plan my day or when to invite people over to visit the baby, etc?

So, when did your baby settle in a predictable nap pattern? What is the pattern? Also, how many hours does your baby nap per day and how many hours asleep at night? Does the length of naps affect the length of night sleep and vice versa?

My son had more predictable naps when he was around 6 months of age. Usually he napped in the morning from 9-11am then he would go down for another nap around 2-4pm. I would put him to bed no later than 8pm. He woke up at around 6am every morning. Children especially babies need to sleep that is when they are growing. I wouldn't worry too much if the nap times seem off for a bit. She will definately be cranky if she had no nap at all, especially if you are running errands all day. Most kids love car rides though, and just doze off. Try and keep a schedual of nap times. 9-11 is a good time as well as 2-4. That way they get to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each baby to their own. See what works for your daughter.

POLL: Have you ever lied down on a public-bathroom floor, with no pants on, and taken a short nap?

Short Nap 44 Comments »

I do like to nap, and generally you will find me in a pantless state on all but the most formal occasions. However, I have a phobia about visiting public bathrooms. One too many negative experiences with George Michael.

Why do we use the phrase 40 winks when somebody's going to have a short nap?

Short Nap 5 Comments »

The idiom today is Forty Winks. Since the 1300s a "wink" meant a short nap. William Shakespeare did not think of 40 as the number after 39. He thought of it as being a few.
